Eatonville Restaurant and Church Lady Cake Diaries are giving a “shout out” to amateur bakers in the Washington DC metropolitan area. The Makes-Me-Wanna SHOUT! Coconut Cake Challenge – aims to be D.C.’s “American Idol” of cake bake-offs. Presented by Eatonville Restaurant and Church Lady Cake Diaries, the challenge invites amateur bakers from the Washington, DC metropolitan area to compete for cash prizes (including a $500 first prize), a chance for the winning cake to be featured on Eatonville Restaurant’s menu and to earn the title of “D.C.’s Ultimate Coconut Cake.”
The contest is open to amateur cooks ages 18 years and older who currently reside in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Application forms must be received by March 1, 2011.

The Makes-Me-Wanna-SHOUT! Coconut Cake Challenge will benefit Miriam’s Kitchen (www.miriamskitchen.org), a non-profit organization that provides meals and support services to homeless men and women. In 2010, Miriam’s Kitchen served over 75,000 healthy meals and provided case management services to 3,000 men and women.
Eatonville Restaurant, “The Soul of Southern Food,” was opened in 2009 by Andy Shallal, founder of Busboys and Poets. Eatvonville’s Executive Chef Garret Fleming is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and has worked at the 4-star Peninsula Grill in Charleston, SC under acclaimed Chef Robert Carter, creator of the world-famous “Ultimate Coconut Cake.” Prior to Eatonville, Chef Fleming was Executive Chef at Stella’s in Castine, Maine. The Church Lady Cake Diaries (www.churchladycake.com) is a documentary and on-line digital media project collecting and presenting first person heritage stories about women and men who were/are part of a divine tradition – making cakes from scratch. The project is directed by Michon Boston, foodlorist, producer, and part of the Michon Boston Group, Ltd, an event, media production and social marketing company.
