Not Your Typical Culinary Reading

In his new book, The Meals of War, Culinary writer Kent Whitaker explores how the U.S. food industry was shaped by World War II. With more than 11,000,000 men and women to feed in the armed services, the food production industry had to transform and adapt. Food acted as a bonding force as well as a luxury that excluded those who could not afford to have the most basic ingredients. Stories from the troops as well as recipes from the time are included in this book that covers the entire span of WWII.

For an interesting read that encompasses both history and food, definitely check this book out after its release coming in July 2011.
