The Spring 2012 Wine Dinner at the Jefferson.  March 8:  Meat Lovers’ Paradise with Blackbird Vineyards – Wine Cellar [$185 per person]  With a winter chill still in the air, the inaugural dinner of the 2012 series is a celebration of [mostly] red meats and the big red wines that bring out their best.  Blackbird Vineyards, a quiet Napa Valley label fast gaining big critical recognition, is the ideal partner for the whole meaty meal:  the word ‘merlot’ is, in fact, French patois for ‘little blackbird,’ and the terroir-driven, Pomerol-inspired blends produced by Blackbird focus solely on varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.  The menu begins with Gougères Stuffed with Poached Veal Breast, Béchamel, and Black Truffle paired with 2011 Blackbird Vineyards Arriviste Rosé.  Progressing through five more savory courses from Short Rib Ravioli to Roast Loin of Venison, the meat doesn’t stop at dessert:  a Black Truffle Pain Perdue with Smoked Bacon Ice Cream and Marmalade of Red Fruits – served with Blackbird’s 2009 Contrarian Red Wine.

Eatrip (subtitled) will screen at 6:30pm on Wednesday, March 14th at the Japan Information and Culture Center, located inside the Japanese Embassy in Washington DC (1150 18th St., N.W.). Tickets are free; please RSVP to jicc@ws.mofa.go.jp or call 202-238-6948. More details on the Environmental Film Festival are available at: www.dcenvironmentalfilmfest.org.

Jeff and Barbara Black, Chef/Owners of Black Restaurant Group and the newly opened Pearl Dive Oyster Palace and Black Jack restaurants, are pleased to host a pre-release party for Port City Brewing Company’s Revival Stout.  On Saturday, March 17th from 2 PM to 4 PM, Bill Butcher, Owner of Port City Brewing Company, and Brad Blymier, Co-Owner of War Shore Oyster Company, will be at Black Jack to debut their special edition beer that was specially created to have an affinity for oysters and seafood.  Crafted by Head Brewer Jonathan Reeves, this beer was made by steeping War Shore’s Chesapeake Bay oyster shells in the brewing water to enhance mineral content, and then adding the oysters and their liquor to the brew during the boil.  The oysters add a subtle briny character, and a smooth textural element to the beer.
