I love a rosé in the spring. South Africa has some outstanding options to go with every course of your dinner. These wines have great quality that won’t hurt your wallet, and they range from sparkling to spicy to boldly fruity. I loved them all!
For the appetizer: Krone Vintage Rosé Cuvee Brut 2012 (SRP: $19.99) South African MCC’s are a great option for value buys. Produced in traditional MCC style from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this wine is lively and uplifting, with delicate berry fruits and elegant yeastiness. The creamy effervescence in this wine is a great match for an appetizer.
For the main course: Secateurs Rosé 2014 (SRP: $14.99) This rosé comes from critically-acclaimed, "Rock-star" winemaker Adi Badenhorst, one of the leaders of the Swartland movement- a region that has garnered much media attention for South Africa recently. The wine is produced in the "Southern Rhone" style from a blend of Cinsault, Shiraz, Grenache Noir and Carignan, with the Grenache Noir and Cinsault coming from some of the oldest vines in the country! The result is a rosé full of complexity and forward minerality. There’s only 3100 cases made, so drink now!
For the dessert: De Morgenzon DMZ Cabernet Rosé 2013 (SRP: $11.99) 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this rosé has more structure and backbone than your typical pink juice. The grapes are grown specifically for rosé production and harvested younger to retain more natural acidity. A fruit forward rose, with juicy flavors of strawberry and watermelon that would pair well with dessert. It really completes the South African experience.
So grab a glass and taste what South African rosés have to offer through your entire meal!
