Judging tonight: MAKES-ME-WANNA SHOUT! COCONUT CAKE Finals

Come to Eatonville tonight for the Coconut Cake Challenge!  I'll be judging to help find the best Coconut Cake to be featured on Eatonville's Menu.

Saturday, March 19, the Makes-Me-Wanna SHOUT! Coconut Cake Semifinals presented 14 different coconut cakes for a public tasting at Miriam’s Kitchen. Both the public and judges voted.  The combined popular and judges’ votes resulted in five finalists:
Coconut Cake (with optional Lemon Filling); Cream Cheese Frosting
Decoyise Brown (Waldorf, MD)
Coconut Cake with Pineapple, Bananas, Toasted Coconut, Sugared Pecans
Christine Perez (Washington, DC)
Coconut Cake with Key Lime Mousse Filling; White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting
Alexis Echols (Washington, DC)
Coconut "Oatmeal Cookie Cake"; Brown Sugar Frosting with Nuts
Lindsey Wahowiak (Washington, DC)
Chocolate Coconut Macaroon Cake
Stephanie Woodrow (Washington, DC)
The five finalist cakes will advance to the final round for the Makes-Me-Wanna SHOUT! Coconut Cake Challenge at Eatonville Restaurant for a chance to win a $500 grand prize and their coconut cake on the Eatonville Restaurant menu. The “Final Five” Happy Hour event is Wednesday, April 27 at Eatonville Restaurant from 5 – 7 pm.  A portion of the sales during the event will benefit Miriam’s Kitchen.  The winning cake will be selected by the official judges. (see Contest Judges).
The Makes Me Wanna SHOUT! Coconut Cake Challenge is presented by Eatonville Restaurant and Church Lady Cake Diaries.  Over 20 applications were submitted to the contest with recipes and cake stories. The contest required all cakes to be made from “scratch” and include real coconut. 14 coconut cake recipes and their bakers were selected to participate in the semifinals held on Saturday, March 19 at Miriam’s Kitchen.
Ticket sales from the semifinals raised over $1,800 for Miriam’s Kitchen.  The proceeds from the Makes-Me-Wanna SHOUT! semifinals will provide at least one meal (breakfast or dinner) for all the guests who depend on Miriam’s Kitchen for support.
Giant Foods and Yes! Organic Market provided gift certificates for the five finalists.  Additional donations were made by organizations and individuals including Food Muse Media, mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, and Becky Squires.
