From Texas with Love: Mi Cocina

Tucked between luxury fashion shops is Friendship Height's newest resident, Mi Cocina, hailing from Dallas, Texas. The Chevy Chase location is the upscale Tex-Mex restaurant chain's first location in the Atlantic area. Airy and spacious with bright paintings decorating the walls, the restaurant will be a much welcomed addition to  the Tex-Mex scene in DC. The bar would easily become a locals favorite hangout with strong drinks like the infamous Mambo Taxi (frozen margarita featuring Sauza Blanco tequila with special house-made Sangria) and opens straight to Wisconsin Ave. The location also offers a private dining room and outdoor seating area in a back sheltered from Wisconsin traffic.

The expansive menu is filled with tacos, ceviches, enchiladas, tamales, etc., plus eggs/brunch items ALL DAY. Though there is plenty of meat and fish on the menu, any dishes were available in vegetarian options. The tamales are unique to the DC restaurant, which is such a pity for the other locations, because they were the highlight of the night. In addition, the pork pineapple tacos, brisket tacos, guacamole, and shrimp ceviches were all  so very delicioso! The masa in the tamales had an unbelievably creamy and soft texture. For those that like things sweet, the pork was tender with just enough chew and the tenderness was enhanced by the pineapple. The brisket tacos were flavorful and juicy. The guacamole and shrimp ceviche were extremely fresh with just a spritz of the zesty lime.

With the painted florals and greenery from artist in residence, Luis Sottil, the space feels very warm and homey while showered with tons of natural light. The artist incorporates local wildlife in his murals and vases displayed around the restaurant, mirroring the values and commitment of the restaurant to provide fresh, local, and high quality ingredients. Will be back to try the rest of the menu!
