First Taste: Karma Modern Indian

Karma, a new spot in Chinatown, is showing off in D.C. with their non-traditional Indian flavors, beautiful open-kitchen atmosphere, and extremely detail-oriented presentations.

The restaurant's name, "Karma" is a nod to positivity and social responsibility, serving healthy options to guests and donating to local DC charities, such as DC Central Kitchen, and global charities including Save The Children. Karma, which opened up about a month ago, serves a variety of large and small plates by Executive Chef Ajay Kumar, who is a native of New Dehli. Some of my favorite plates included the staple Indian dish, Hyderabadi Dum Biryani, and their spicy vegetarian Tandoori Cauliflower. I love Indian, but I am also such a carb girl. You have no idea how excited I became when the menu had a section titled "HEAVENLY BREADS." They aren't lying. Trust me, order the wild mushroom and truffle oil naan alongside some Butter Chicken or Tandoori Lamb Chops. If you're still hungry after dinner, Karma also serves stunning desserts with house-made ice cream and unique Indian flavors.

Along with a menu with a plethora of Indian spices, Karma offers a make-your-own Happy Hour from 4-7PM Monday through Friday and a drink menu with unique house creations. My favorites include the Green Goddess, which felt like a refreshing drink from the Spa, and The Temple of Salt, which is mixed up with Elijah Craig Small Batch, Green Chartreuse, Lime Juice, Honey, Himalayan Salt, House Kashmiri Chilli Bitters, and Egg Whites! If you aren't sure what to order, the bartenders also love making custom off-the-menu creations! Just ask.

Karma Modern Indian is THE Indian spot to hit! Check it out in Chinatown when you're wanting to wow somebody visiting you!

Karma is located at 611 I St NW, Washington, DC 20001 and is open from 11:30AM-2:30PM Monday-Saturday, 5:30PM-11:00PM Sunday-Thursday, and 5:30PM-11:30PM on Friday and Saturday. For reservations and more information, go to: Karma
