Belgian Food Festival Promises More Than Just Waffles

Belgian food is more than just waffles and chocolate, the Second Annual Belgian Restaurant Week kicking off July 14, aims to illustrate. The week-long event in Washington, DC, will unite D.C.'s top Belgian toques and restaurants in preparation for Belgium’s National Day on July 21.

The week includes traditional Belgian treats ranging from mussels and frites to chocolate and waffles to a variety of beers.  Festivities will be held at all participating restaurants:

  • Thursday, July 14th - Kick Off Preview at Brew at the Zoo VIP event
  • Friday, July 15th - Belgian Prix Fixe Menu
  • Saturday, July 16th - Mussels Throw Down at Eastern Market's North Hall sponsored by Stella Artois
  • Sunday, July 17th - Belgian Waffle Brunch
  • Monday, July 18th - Chocolate & Champagne hosted by Veuve Clicquot, Belvedere & Grand Marnier
  • Tuesday, July 19th - Seven-Course Belgian Beer Dinner featuring Chefs from participating restaurants hosted by Belgium Ambassador Jan Matthysen and Mrs. Matthysen at their Residence.
  • Wednesday, July 20th - Duvel Happy Hour Events
  • Thursday, July 21st - Belgian National Day Celebrations sponsored by Latis Imports

Restaurants Belga Café, Brabo, Brasserie Beck, Et Voila!, Granville Moore's, L'Ocolat, Le Pain Quotidien, Marcel's, Marvin and Mussel Bar will host a series of festivities showcasing the traditions and customs of Belgium as well as marking the 181st anniversary of Belgium's independence. The restaurants highlight aspects of Belgian culture that have gained international appreciation: its culture and cuisine.

“The Belgian Restaurant Week in Washington, D.C., is a showcase of the best Belgium has to offer in the culinary field," said Belgian Ambassador Jan Matthysen. "Whether you are new to our cuisine or already a fan, a Belgian culinary experience is something you will never forget.”

I’m looking forward to Belgian Restaurant Week for more than just the authentic chocolate and beer that is promised. Rather, delicious Belgian foods like frites, frikandel, and Moules-frites will be on display for tastings that promise to pique the interest of people who have never enjoyed Belgian food before. Be sure to follow up with my review of Belgian Restaurant Week.

I am very excited for this! I spent a few weeks in Belgium myself and Belga Cafe does it homage well (even Kwak beer!). I'll be sure to look into these other Belgium places and post my review on my own foodie blog, HungryinDC.com
