Honoring our Veterans with Robert Irvine

Military personnel, lobbyists, a handful of senators, staffers, and reporters all met on Capitol Hill in the Hart Senate Building on Tuesday afternoon to honor our veterans with celebrity Chef Robert Irvine, Hire Heroes USA, and Walmart.

Chef Irvine is an english celebrity chef, known for his many appearances on Food Network, including in his top rated show, "Restaurant: Impossible," and also has his own talk show on CW. Irvine is a fitness guru, with his own healthy food product line and a frequent columnist in Muscle and Fitness magazine. Irvine, a veteran of the Royal Navy, also started the Robert Irvine Foundation to honor the men and women in the military, which helps to support active military personnel and veterans in need.

At the beginning of the event, the Walmart foundation announced that they are awarding a $1 million grant to Hire Heroes USA. Hire Heroes USA is a national non-profit that helps to empower military veterans find meaningful employment and succeed in the civilian workforce. Brian Stann, President and CEO of Hire Heroes USA and a veteran himself said to the crowd on Tuesday afternoon,
“Veterans have unique and valued skill sets, such as leadership, creativity and problem solving, making them highly marketable job candidates. Support from organizations like the Walmart Foundation make it possible for us to continue to lead the way in veteran hiring through innovation, focus and hard work."

The event featured an interactive dessert reception, with a buffet-style ice cream bar, numerous small bites, and an entire table filled with cheesecake made by Robert Irvine's food line. All of the desserts at the event are sold at all Walmart stores.

After all the guests tried the delicious sweets, Chef Irvine led two different dessert challenges with guest volunteers. The first challenge involved blindfolds and sundae-making, and the second involved trying to make whip cream! After these interactive competitions, guests took pictures with Chef Irvine and mingled with the other veterans and attendees.
