Tomorrow: Mussels Throw Down 2012

By Viola Bello

What better way to celebrate Belgian National Day, Saturday July 21, then to have a moules competition to the last slurp between chefs Martin Castillo of Belga Café, Eric Frisch of Et Voila!, Teddy Folkman of Granville Moore’s, Geert Pieferoen of Locolat Café, and Paul Stearman of Brasserie Beck?

You don’t need to go to Belgium to try the decadent dishes the chefs will make to win the coveted first place of Mussels Throw Down 2012.  So, save the money you would be spending on a plane ticket and, instead head to Yards Park at the Capital Riverfront for Taste of Belgium.  In addition to mussels ($6), there will be frites ($4), waffles ($4), and ice cream and beer floats ($4).  You can also buy Taste of Belgium Ticket Package for $20.

The event will be sponsored by Stella Artois, so you know there will be plenty of beer ($6) to have with the mussels.  It will be judged by Jan Van Haute, chef of the Embassy of Belgium, Bonnie Benwick, Washington Post Food Editor, Greet de Keyser of Belgium VRT Television, and Chris Meyers of Stella Artois.

Taste of Belgium is free and open to the public from 12PM to 6:30PM.  Food and drinks tickets can be purchased at the event.
