On The Road Again: Kansas City

We love Kansas City!

There is so much to do in Kansas City – and I always love coming back to my hometown. The city is turning into a lively spot for foodies and party-goers, but still has its lovely family-oriented charm. Here are a few spots to check out if you are in the area:

Farina is the new restaurant to go to in KC. James Beard award-winning chef Michael Smith and his business partner (and loving partner!), Nancy Smith, just opened the spot in the Crossroads of KC. This is Michael Smith’s third restaurant to open in KC - The former Michael Smith space has closed and is now Michael Smith Private Dining & Events. His restaurant Extra Virgin, a Spanish tapas restaurant right next to both of his other establishments, will remain open and delicious!

When walking into Farina – I felt as though I was still in Washington D.C. The spot is chic, modern, and rustic all at once, seating about 90 diners between the large bar, the trendy oyster bar and the cozy dining spaces. The restaurant also has two dining rooms for a more private experience.

Farina, which is Italian for Flour, highlights incredible pasta dishes created by Michael Smith. The menu also features fresh oysters, antipasta, fish, steak, seasonal favorites, desserts, and other delicious eats.

Some of the favorites from the Menu:

Sardinian Black Rice

Sliced Prosciutto, Oysters, and Duck Meatballs

Rabbit Gnocchi, Caramelle, and Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe

Veal Chop Pizzaiola
Italian Ice Cream and Cookies

I am a foodie, and love to go out to new restaurants, but anytime I go home to KC, I am always greeted with a big family BBQ. My family gets all of their fresh cuts from a local butcher. Broadway Butcher has a great selection of cuts and seafood. The prices of the slices are very reasonable and all of the food is sustainable and high-quality. This butchered-to-order shop right in midtown is super friendly – and anytime my family walks in they are welcomed with a smile and a story. My brother picked up pork ribs and seafood for a homemade ceviche – it was all incredible! We spent the day on the lake and eating lots of delicious grilled eats on the patio.

This is one of my favorite little places to go downtown. The restaurant and coffeehouse is hidden away, with a beautiful little patio and small inside space perfect for brunch on the weekends. The crepe place has savory and sweet options, and one of the best lobster bisque’s I have ever eaten! I am always taking my hometown girlfriends and new out-of-towners here.

This KC shop is perfect for trendy KC-swag, and is located right next to Chez Elle. I stop in and buy a new t-shirt every time I visit the area.

The Plaza

If you’re from the KC area, you know exactly what this spot is. The Plaza is where everyone goes to shop, eat, and hangout outside in the city. It has lots of upscale clothing stores, perfect spots for lunch and dinner, beautiful fountains and patios, and a country club with tennis courts and other outside activities. Most days you will find the plaza filled with families and friends walking around chatting, shopping, and hunting for the perfect place to eat.

Nightlife: Offkey, Missie B’s, and Up-Down

During the night, Kansas City comes to life! KC has tons of bars and clubs to sing, dance, and drink the night away with friends. I went to Offkey – a fun karaoke bar, Missie B’s – a gay night club, and Up-Down, an arcade bar. There are many other spots to check out in Westport, the Crossroads, and the Power and Light District, but these were some of my favorites! KC is really turning into a fun night-life spot!

It was a great weekend in KC, and I can’t wait to go back.
