After a soft opening that lasted several days, Flat Iron Steak and Saloon, the newest dining option on King Street in Old Town Alexandria, officially opened for business on Friday, July 26th. We stopped by a preview event the week of the grand opening to sample their menu.
We started off by trying a few of their starters.
Flat Iron's Signature Parmigiana Tots are stuffed with mashed potatoes, apple-wood bacon and a mixture of italian cheeses.
The Angus Filet Mignon Sliders, served with sauteed onions, cheddar jack cheese & horseradish mayo sauce, will be cooked to order, though during the preview, they all seemed to be well done.
The roasted chicken egg rolls joined the mini crab cakes on the list of my favorite starters. They were filled with smoked chicken, corn, red onions and cheddar Monterrey Jack cheese and were served w/avocado & jalapeño dipping sauce.
The mini crab cake, made with papaya mango chutney, was one of my favorite bites of the night. My friend even said she'd come back to Flat Iron just to get these.
From the salads and soups selection comes the Fresh Lobster Bisque. This remained on my table for quite some time, so others assumed I didn't like it, but I was actually just trying to make it last!
In addition to the starters and soups, we were also able to try a few of the Chef's Specialities.
The jambalaya includes sauteed gulf shrimp & chicken w/crispy andouille sausage and rice in a spicy Creole sauce.
Samples of the signature Flat Iron Slow Roast Prime-Rib, served with horseradish and au jus were much more tender than the filet mignon in the sliders.
Though the food on its own was great, you can't have a saloon without drinks and we were able to try a few of Flat Iron's signature cocktails.
I overheard several people say good things about the Tavern Lemonade, made with Jack Daniels Whiskey, fresh sweet and sour and peaches, though I was more drawn to the King Street Cooler.
Made with Grey Goose Pear Vodka, St. Germaine, simple syrup, ruby red grapefruit and lemon, this cooler was super refreshing-definitely something I'd love to have been sipping on outdoors.
I was also able to try The Potomac, made with Stoli Citrus vodka, peach schnapps, simply syrup, blueberries and cranberry juice.
Though I've been living in Old Town Alexandria since January, I rarely dine on King Street, as I spend a lot of time in DC. I will be returning to Flat Iron soon however, as there are many more items on the menu I am eager to try. Alongside their steak and seafood dishes, Flat Iron Saloon also offers flatbread pizza, tacos and sandwiches.
Flat Iron Steak is located on 808 King Street in Alexandria.
