Dining Out: Silver

On Friday, June 9th we were invited to Silver in Bethesda to meet Co-founder and Executive Chef Ype Von Hengst and to try out their new menu. Silver is an upscale diner that was founded by Ype and his partner Bob Glaimo over 25 years ago, known originally as the Silver Diner.

Silver is an updated, chic version of the old-fashioned American diner. The menu at Silver was created by Executive Chef Ype and offers healthier flexitarian options. Silver has all the classics, including juicy burgers and milkshakes, as well as healthier selections such as grilled atlantic salmon, gluten-free pancakes, and watermelon salads. Silver serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, as well as serving cocktails and local brews at the bar. All the food from Silver is locally sourced.

Earlier this year Chef Ype won Food Network's "Chopped" competition. Ype competed against 3 other modern diner chefs, and won the final dessert round with his fig beignets and ice-cream. After winning Chopped, Ype donated his $10,000 prize to Doctors Without Borders

While visiting Silver, I tried the Silver Smash, which was a mixture of Bacardi Raspberry Rum, ginger beer syrup, blueberries, simple syrup, cucumber, and lemon. This drink was delicious, and the cucumber gave it an interesting burst of freshness. I also tried the Tennessee Mule, which was made with George Dickel Rye Whiskey, Apricot Brandy, and ginger beer syrup.

After our Cocktails we ordered Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Tuna Tartare from the sharing plates. We couldn't believe how delicious the appetizers were! For our entrees we ordered Chef Ype's Summer Special Mahi-Mahi and an Angus Cheeseburger. For dessert, we ordered Chef Ype's Four Berry Pie for Two and two milkshakes--Oreo and Chunky Monkey. By the end of the night we were satisfied and VERY full!

This modern farm-to-table diner was the perfect date night spot--with an amazing dining experience. Silver is located at 7150 Woodmont Ave., Bethesda, Md. Silver is open Sunday-Thursday from 7AM-11PM and Friday-Saturday 7AM-12AM. I am excited to go back to try their delicious brunch options--including their caramel french toast, farm fresh omelets, and mango mimosas.
