Upcoming Events: Crab and More!

The Eighth Annual DC Crab Cake Competition held by The Source by Wolfgang Puck:  The American Institute of Wine and Food (AIWF) and The Source by Wolfgang Puck (located in the Newseum) are pleased to host the Eighth Annual Crab Cake Competition on June 9, 2013 from 12-3 pm.  The competition is designed to raise awareness for local and sustainable seafood initiatives, as well as funds for culinary internships, scholarships and educational programs.  The contest will pit eight of the area's top chefs against one another in a crab cake battle that will exclusively utilize and showcase Department-verified Maryland blue crab.  The winning chef will receive funds to support a culinary intern in their kitchen. In addition, six students from area culinary schools will compete for a chance to win a $500 scholarship towards their studies.  Tickets are $70 per person inclusive of tax and gratuity, and include tastes of all the crab cakes, local oyster bars, and beer and wine stations.  Further information and tickets are available at aiwfcrabcakes.eventbrite.com.

Celebrate Executive Chef Yesoon Lee’s Birthday with a Special Collaboration Dinner at Mandu!  On Sunday, June 9th at 7 pm, Mandu will celebrate Executive Chef Yesoon Lee’s birthday with a special collaboration dinner featuring Executive Chefs Scott Drewno of The Source, Haidar Karoum of Proof/Estadio/Doi Moi, Jonah Kim and Yoji Harada of Pabu, and Will Morris of Vermilion.  Priced at $50 per person, the six-course dinner, served family style, will be held on Sunday, June 9th at 7:00 PM in the first floor dining room of Mandu’s K St. location. 50% of the proceeds from the dinner will be donated to the DC Youth Orchestra (http://www.dcyop.org/). The DC Youth Orchestra provides affordable, high quality music instruction and performance opportunities to young musicians in Washington, DC.

Bourbon, Beer, and Barbecue at the Occidental...need I say more? The Occidental Grill and Seafood is featuring some beloved B's, including Bob Schieffer, host of CBS' "Face the Nation," as the entertainment for the evening with band, "Honky Tonk Confidential" all in support of Microgreens, a non-profit that helps families on a government-supplemented budget purchase heart-healthy groceries. The occasion will also feature the Occidental’s signature corn bread, slaw and pickle bar, blueberry cobbler, fudge brownies and snow cones. So come out on Saturday, June 15th from 12 to 3 pm and support this great nonprofit, while enjoying some good eats and treats on the Occidental’s patio – just two blocks away from the White House. Bourbon is for Beauties and Real Men Drink Bubbles: BOURBON STEAK is mixing things up this summer, offering a bourbon mixology class for ladies and a sparkling wine class geared towards gents. Head Bartenders Jamie MacBain and Duane Sylvestre will lead ladies that love bourbon in a two-hour class to illustrate how to mix up proper Manhattans, among other brown concoctions. Head Sommelier Julian Mayor will separate the boys from the men in a class focusing on sparkling wines from the old world and the new. All participants are invited to mix and mingle together after class and enjoy complementary tastes designed by Executive Chef John Critchley on BOURBON STEAK’s patio. Priced at $95 per person, not including tax and gratuity, both classes will be held simultaneously on Saturday, June 15, 2013 from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM. More than a menu change or food demonstration, guests will experience and taste their way through regional varieties found throughout Spain. The Escriba family is famous for owning one of Barcelona’s oldest and legendary bakeries.

Alexandria Food and Wine Festival - June 22: Sips, slurps, chomps, and laughter will fill the air in Old Town Alexandria in the Carlyle District (300 John Carlyle Street) as the local community gathers together to enjoy the diverse restaurants of Alexandria and Virginia’s wineries for the 1st Annual Alexandria Food and Wine Festival.
