On Saturday sugar fanatics descended on Union Market for DC Scoop 2011, a competition featuring some of the best creameries and gelato makers in the DMV. Upon arriving each attendee received 4 free tasting tickets for their choice of samples and one ticket to vote for their favorite. Lines were long for the 14 vendors in attendance, but the team behind DC Scoop kept people entertained with music, ice cream eating contests and face painting for the kids.
My favorite ice cream of the day was the Coffee Oreo ice cream from Toby’s Homemade Ice Cream and Coffee in Arlington, Va. The ice cream was rich and creamy with huge Oreo chunks throughout and a crisp piece of waffle cone as a garnish.
Milwaukee Frozen Custard opted for traditional samplings with your choice of either vanilla or chocolate ice cream, but mixed it up with a DIY toppings bar that both children and adults seemed to love.
Many vendors offered several different flavors, such as Plush Gelato who had a great selection ranging from Thai Tea to Pineapple Basil. The refreshing gelato was perfect for the hot day and was a nice change from the heavier cream-based ice creams.
Dolcezza Gelato, in Georgetown, showcased its light and fresh side with a Cucumber Mint Vodka sorbetto, and its dark and decadent side with a Valrhona Chocolate Amargo gelato.
The least favorite of the day was the Durian ice cream from Tropical Ice Cream Café. It was great to see so many exotic flavors, but the Durian ice cream left an aftertaste that lingered and left a sour note in your mouth.
A group of local judges, including Scott Drewno of The Source by Wolfgang Puck, deliberated over their favorite treat. And the winner of the golden scoop is…. Dolcezza Gelato!
Sinplicity Ice Cream was also recognized as the winner for Consumers' Choice!
