DC VegFest 2014

By Lauren Rosalanko

DC VegFest's Preview was hosted by Busboys and Poets' downtown location at 1025 5th Street NW. The preview featured just a few of the fantastic vendors that will be attending the DC VegFest on Saturday September 20th at Yards Park (on the corner of N St and 1st St SE, DC). I got a small taste of the vendors and Busboys and Poets' new vegan menu options at this event, which was more than enough to get me to attend the VegFest next weekend!

Some of the vendors featured at the preview included: Charm School Chocolate, South Block Juice Co., Animal Rescue Bar, and Compassion Over Killing. This is just a small taste of the 100+ vendors who will attend the event at Yards Park. I am a huge chocolate fan (usually preferring a dark chocolate) so I was fascinated to try vegan Charm School Chocolate. The care and process that goes into this chocolate is unparalleled and I tried the 70% Dark Belize chocolate, as well as the milk chocolate product. Both were rich, creamy and absolutely delicious! Any vegans in need of a chocolate fix should definitely check out Charm School Chocolate and if you are in the DC area you can pick up their products at Sticky Fingers and Little Red Fox.

Busboys and Poets acted a gracious host and showed off some awesome new menu items. My favorite bites were the vegan burger with a chipotle sauce and the coconut tofu bites. The sauce on the burger as well as the plum sauce accompanying the tofu bites complemented the food and added another level of vibrant flavor. I felt as if I was having a real, red meat burger and the coconut tofu bites were more flavorful than coconut shrimp! The cucumber canapés were light, tasty, and refreshing.

My favorite part about all of these items is you really couldn't tell if it was vegan. It seems like some people still hold stigma about vegan food lacking in flavor, but restaurants such as Busboys and Poets are crushing that stereotype with innovative new vegan menu items. Busboys and Poets does a great job of creating unique items that don't lose flavor or moisture. Lastly, Sticky Fingers' had their chocolate brownies, filled with as much fudge and chocolate as possible, as a dark chocolate lover this was sure to satisfy. I'm definitely ready for my next trip to Busboys and Poets and Sticky Fingers.

Lastly, I left with a goody bag of delicious treats! The first 1,000 attendees will receive a 2014 DC VegFest tote bag with all of the awesome products, coupons and other goodies. For more specific info on sponsors, event information, speakers and more check out the VegFest website at http://dcvegfest.com. The event was a huge success, with so many attendees that delicious food from multiple vendors sold out during the event!
