DC's Picnic Friendly Locations

Location, Location, Location. We've all heard this saying before, but when it comes to picnics, it is among the most important aspects. But don't stress in your search for the perfect hot spot. We are about to give you some of D.C.'s most picnic friendly locations, adding a touch of history at the same time!

Most famously known for its Cherry Blossom display in the Spring, The Potomac Park is a wonderful picnic area of Washington. Stretching for 720 acres and divided by the Tidal Basin, finding a wonderful spot to dish into your basket won't be hard. The East Potomac Park includes Hains Point and the Jefferson Memorial, two perfect places for an outdoors day.

There is also Rock Creek Park, which extends 12 miles from the Potomac River to the Maryland border. It is one of the largest city parks in the nation, originally built to defend Washington during the Civil War. In fact, four forts still remain! Attractions of the Park include: views of the Old Stone House in Georgetown, Carter Barron Amphitheaters, playgrounds for the little ones, and acres of wooded park lands.

Dumbarton Oaks is an estate housing Byzantine and Pre-Columbian works of art. With ten acres of beautifully landscaped land, it is a wonderful place to appreciate some of European Art in America.

Another fun twist at a picnic may be at a local winery and vineyard! Maryland and Virginia are home to a few. Lost Creek Winery is family owned and operated near Leesburg, Virginia. This Winery is steeped in history as the site for one of Robert E. Lee's crossings, and it is also the site for Battle of Ball's Bluffs during the Civil War.

Boordy Vineyards is Maryland's oldest family run winery. Established in 1945, the winery is on a 230 acre farm in the Baltimore Countryside. While enjoying your picnic, you witness the rows of vines and the antique farm buildings of the 19th century.

Let Capital Cooking be apart of your next picnic, and make sure to watch Lauren's upcoming episode, Picnic Pleasers. With these hot spots combined with some of Lauren's tasty treats, you are bound to enjoy your day outdoors in our nation's capital.
