The 2012 Swirlwind Tour Wines of the World Review

By Viola Bello

The 2012 Swirlwind Tour Wines of the World took place at the Dupont Circle Hotel on March 27, 2012. Hosted by Diageo Chateau and Estate Wines, it featured bold reds and floral whites from Burgundy, California, Chile and Argentina.

I was ushered into a big ballroom inside the hotel.  Picture speed dating, but your date was the bottle(s) of wine across from you! One of my favorite reds was the 2007 Vosne-Romanee. This is a Pinot Noir from the region of Burgundy. With a deep red color, the wine had an elegant structure to it. A hint of berries and medium acidity, the wine draws you in. I would definitely try this wine again. Best part is that because it is not too heavy, you can pair this wine with any food you want, so you can break the rule that red wines must only be paired with red meats.

Of the white wines in display, one of the most memorable ones was the Uppercut. A 2010 Sauvignon Blanc from Provenance Vineyards. This was the driest white wine from this winemaker. With a light and pale color, the wine was tart with hints of lemon and lime. Great for a summer evening, this wine was absolutely delicious.  It was fun to taste and experience some new wines.
