Since the 1990s, the craft beer industry has been steadily gaining popularity across the United States. If you're in the DC area, there is only one place where you can get your authentic craft brewery fix, Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria, VA. Located two miles from the King Street Metro, the brewery was founded in 2011 by Bill Butcher and Head Brewer Jonathon Reeves serves up four year round staple brews and a rotating seasonal concoction. Get your growlers (four pint beer jugs) ready for a smooth pour of their delicious beers.
The new seasonal lager beer dubbed 'Downright Pilsner' has a very smooth and refreshing taste and is the perfect beverage for a summer picnic or evening on the front porch (or rooftop or stoop of course). Reeves created this unfiltered creamy beverage by drawing inspiration from Czech style brews.
Another delicious pour is the 'Revival'. This smoky dark beer is brewed with Chesapeake Bay oysters, approximately 1,500 are used to season each batch. With the exception of 'Revival', all of the beers at Port City Brewery are vegan.
Starting on July 1, 2012 the Virginia ABC law banning the distribution of pints of beer at breweries in the state will be null and void. Port City Brewery has built a brand new bar and will kick off their pint service with a Pint Party on that Sunday from 12 PM - 6 PM.
I highly recommend stopping in for a tour as well. Mr. Butcher walks you through the entire process: from their giant silo of grain outside, to the hop and seasoning stages, to the bottling and storage procedures. You can also join them on Thursday night when a food truck comes by to serve munchies with your beer. If you can't make it out to the brewery, you can go on Port City's website and use their Beer Finder for a location near you in either DC, Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.
